Innovation Accelerator: More great speakers confirmed..

Posted by Anton Mannering on February 5th, 2009

24th Feb should be a great day. As time draws nearer for Innovation Accelerator more of the line up is being confirmed. It’s great to get to work with some of these people but as if the group of speakers already confirmed wasn’t good enough, we have another group now confirmed who are absolutely brilliant. Check these guys out…

Niall Harbison – Niall Harbison started his career as a chef in Ireland’s premier restaurant at the time, Peacock Alley, under the guidance of Michelin Star chef Conrad Gallagher. Niall became the youngest Head Chef in Ireland of a fine dining establishment in 2001 when he took the reigns at Lloyd’s Brasserie at the age of 20. Niall is now the resident chef and co-founder of ‘Look and Taste’ website which provides free online video recipes with professional chefs and a social community for food lovers. It has already won a web award in its native Ireland by receiving a Golden Spider in late 2007 and in May 2008 it was recognised as the 3rd best European Web2.0 startup this year.

Pat Phelan – Pat Phelan has been involved in the telecoms arena for over 10 years and has deep experience in both the US and European markets. His first step into the market was the building of the first callshop and internet café software, a successful product still in use today by over 100 internet cafés worldwide. Pat launched Ireland’s first independently owned phones cards in 1999 and continues to trade in this market in a numbers of countries, with the business hitting 5-7 million minutes termination per month. Over the past three years Pat has run back end on a number of incredibly successful products, including one which sells to this day onboard Ryanair. He now sees himself as a telecoms disruptor and a champion of the underdog against the ruling telecomms companies. He lives in Cork, Ireland but spends almost three months per year on the West Coast of the USA. His numerous contacts at telecom’s highest levels in the USA and Europe enable him to flirt between the boardroom and the coalface.

Emily Tully – Emily Tully is a former newsreader, editor and reporter with national radio station Today Fm. After more then 6 years receiving PR material as a journalist, Emily decided to return to Public Relations, where she first began her career in 2001. To date, Emily has worked in the newsrooms of East Coast FM, Newstalk and Today FM. She has trained as a Public Affairs Officer for Irish Aid’s Rapid Response Corps. In the field of PR, she’s worked with clients such as Sustainable Energy Ireland, Ryanair, Independent Newspapers, BlueMetrix, Embassy of Brazil, Louth Local Authorities, the International Puppet Festival of Ireland and Omniscout Ireland. Emily provides advice and expertise on all aspects of public relations, media activity and online PR, specialising in in PR campaigns for smaller budgets and for start-ups.

Joe Drumgoole – Joe Drumgoole is software industry veteran with over twenty years experience in building commercial software at companies both large (DEC, Nomura, Oracle) and small (CR2, Cape Clear, PutPlace). His most recent venture is as founder and CTO of PutPlace.com, an online backup service for home users. Joe is a regular speaker at conferences and was one of the first users of Amazon’s Cloud Computing services when they launched in 2006. PutPlace.com is now completely hosted in the Amazon cloud and continues to reap the benefits of being architected from scratch for “cloud computing”.

David Petherick – Described by the BBC in 2007 as the world’s first Digital Biographer, David Petherick has co-founded several companies in his home city of Edinburgh, including Russian Communications (1993), NewsBase (1995) and Clarocada (2005). All focus on making words make sense. He currently is UK Contributing Editor for http://TheNextWeb.com, based in Amsterdam, blogs at http://digitalbiographer.com and improves online reputation and visibility for ambitious entrepreneurs and savvy corporations. He is one of 237 authors of the ebook, hardback and paperback ‘Age of Conversation 2′ the proceeds of which all go to Variety, the childrens charity.

Mark Simons – Mark Simons has helped some of Ireland’s most successful software companies to grow sales over the last 20 years. Mark spent eight years at IONA Technologies, where he opened and ran offices in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. At Kindle Banking Systems, Mark led sales efforts in a number of emerging markets in Eastern Europe. Previously he had been sales and marketing director of Trintech, where he established its original sales operations in Ireland and Germany.

Gordon Wilson – Gordon Wilson is a Chartered Accountant, working as a Director of Corporate Finance and IT Development at Hilary Haydon & Company. Gordon heads up a dynamic team of accountants in providing professional advice and consultancy services to a broad client base on a diverse range of issues, from mergers, acquisitions and disposals, business start-ups, corporate restructuring and refinancing, to consulting on IT and Management Information Systems for clients.

The event is really starting to look like it’ll be a bit special and I for one am really looking forward to it. I’m buzzed about hearing from an incredible range of speakers on a huge range of subjects for early stage businesses.

Head on over here to register or check out who else is going here.

See you there.

Sony Ericsson Telecoms Tag Rugby

Posted by Anton Mannering on January 30th, 2009

Fo all the sporty types reading this blog I though I’d give you a heads up about something a bit more lighthearted that’s coming up in May. It’s be great to see a few teams from those at the edges of telecoms industry take a few industry stalwarts to the cleaners. :) (Go on MAXroam you know you want to)
This unique event will take place on Thursday the 7th of May in Railway Union RFC in Sandymount. Teams from Meteor, Vodafone, O2, 3,Hutchinson, Sigma plus many more industry teams will compete for the title of best Telecoms Tag Team – bragging rights for years!

Teams will arrive from 5 pm , and will be taken through a light warm up ahead of the round robin format. The winners of the round robin will go on to the quarters, semis and Final to determine the overall winner. Food entertainment and a bar will be provided until late in to the evening.

Apparently there will be a special guest band that we will be announced later. Companies are encouraged to rally supporters for the company team to cheer them on during the tournament.
As well as being a fun active evening’s entertainment, industry networking in a positive environment is encouraged!
The cost of the team is €300 with entertainment and BBQ included. So for a 10 man Team (hey you don’t want to be running all the time) that means €30 each not bad for an evenings entertainment with food included.

I’m off to figure out how I’m in the Telecoms space so I might just see you there.

Microsoft Launchy thing @ Digital Island Meetup

Ok folks two things. First of all there’s a change of venue for the Digital Island Meetup on the 6th of November. We’re heading to the (very posh) Four Seasons Hotel in Ballsbridge for the meetup. Sorry for the late change but it’ll be worth it. ;-)

The second thing is that Microsoft will be launching a new program for startups at the Digital Island Meetup. Details of the program are under wraps at the moment but Paul Rellis, GM Microsoft Ireland and Cliff Reeves, GM Microsoft Global Emerging Business Team will be there to tell us about the program. So we can safely assume that this is a big announcement for Microsoft.

Here’s some of the admittedly vague details of the program. The announcement is at 6:30pm so get their early to get all the juicy bits and don’t worry it won’t drag on.

Members of the program will get

  1. All the software and tools they need to both develop and deploy their solution,
  2. Technical and business support
  3. Lots more visibility to potential customers, partners and investors.
  4. The program also offers start-ups in Ireland and Northern Ireland some great discounts on hardware and hosting packages

After they do the launchy thing we’ll be having a short panel discussion on fostering start-ups and innovation in Ireland, featuring some local start-ups, and representatives from industry bodies and even a few VCs as well. Come along and grill them if you like…

Then we’re back to MoMo territory with some short presentations from three mobile startups and then we’re into OpenDemo and networking.

Go signup to come along now so we know who’s coming.

Event: Digital Media Breakfast, 4th November

Posted by Anton Mannering on October 28th, 2008

Hi there folks I’m delighted to announce the launch of the Digital Media Breakfast events which will roll out to smaller places over the next while.

Where: Cafe Urbano, IFSC, Dublin – Tuesday, 4th November, 7:30am-ish

Map image

We do evening events regularly but we want to offer more. We want to run a smaller event at the other end of the day for Digital people who can’t make it in the evenings.

The theme of the event is open for now but there will be a Q&A about the progress of the network project and the Digital Media Forum and I’d love your suggestions ideas and inputs for future events and initiatives.

We will be running another breakfast in Dublin for Enterprise week on Friday 21st on the theme of “Funding in a tightening economy” more details to follow on that one.

The format will initially be relatively free flowing with some networking and informal discussions. That’s not fixed though so we’re open to the idea of this becoming seminar based or otherwise. We’d love your input into what type of event this eventually becomes. So come along and add your views.

Coffee and pastries will be provided and some good networking to boot. See you there…

Please leave a comment below if you’re coming. (Gives us an idea of numbers)

Digital Media Panel: Get your pitch ready

Posted by Anton Mannering on July 21st, 2008

Digital_media_panel_flyerThe Digital Media Forum is always working to try and bring value to companies in the Digital space. Digital Media in Ireland is an emerging sector and because of this many if not most businesses in this sector are early stage companies who need as much help and support as possible to reach there goals.

Access to top business experts and good advice are critical to the process but can at times be expensive and difficult to achieve and as Joe Drumgoole learned at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Franciso you can’t be too prepared when pitching. Opportunities to fine tune your pitch and proposition and then have mentors from highly successful companies work with you on improving your company are extremely valuable. Enter the Digital Media Panel.

The Digital Media Panel draws panelists from different sources depending on who the applicants pitching are. These include:

  1. Our Listed Corporate sponsors
  2. Experts in Digital Media tailored to the particular company
  3. Venture Capitalists
  4. Successful Digital Media Entrepreneurs

For even more details please feel free to contact us

Applications

Applications are open now for the first panel in September so please fill out the online application form.

Applications close on the 30th of July so don’t delay as there are only 4 places on each panel.
